Vancouver Canucks

State of the teamVancouver bottomed out, finishing last in the entire NHL for the first time since 1971-72 at 58 points and becoming the first team eliminated from playoff contention. The season was defined by a franchise-altering trade: captain Quinn Hughes was dealt to Minnesota in December. With GM Patrik Allvin fired after the season and Elias Pettersson down to a 51-point year, the Canucks face a long road back. That road got longer in May, when new GM Ryan Johnson fired head coach Adam Foote and his entire staff five days after taking the job. Manny Malhotra takes over a dressing room the club has openly described as needing rebuilding, and Vancouver used the No. 3 pick on Malhotra's son Caleb. The new season starts tracking here at puck drop.

Team Engine

Under-the-hood numbers, season by season: faceoffs, possession (SAT% is what the analytics crowd calls Corsi; Fenwick is the same idea minus blocked shots — above 50% means this team controls play), special teams, and shot rates.

07

Zone Time

Offensive-zone time is the why behind shot-attempt share (SAT%) above — a team that lives in the offensive zone out-attempts opponents. The line tracks how that's moved season by season; the bar is this year's split. Based on NHL player-tracking data.
