Utah Mammoth

State of the teamIn their first season as the Utah Mammoth, the franchise made the playoffs. Utah clinched with 92 points before losing a six-game first-round series to the eventual finalist Golden Knights. Clayton Keller (88 points) and Dylan Guenther (40 goals) led a young, ascending roster under coach André Tourigny. For a club barely two years removed from Arizona, reaching the postseason was a milestone in itself. Utah paid to keep its blue line together, signing John Marino to an eight-year, $54 million extension, and traded JJ Peterka to Boston for two first-round picks. The bigger addition was down the middle: Vincent Trocheck arrived from the Rangers. The new season starts tracking here at puck drop.

Team Engine

Under-the-hood numbers, season by season: faceoffs, possession (SAT% is what the analytics crowd calls Corsi; Fenwick is the same idea minus blocked shots — above 50% means this team controls play), special teams, and shot rates.

Zone Time

Offensive-zone time is the why behind shot-attempt share (SAT%) above — a team that lives in the offensive zone out-attempts opponents. The line tracks how that's moved season by season; the bar is this year's split. Based on NHL player-tracking data.
