Toronto Maple Leafs

State of the teamToronto won the draft lottery and took Gavin McKenna No. 1. He is the third first-overall pick in franchise history, after Auston Matthews and Wendel Clark. This after the Maple Leafs cratered, crashing from 108 points to 78 — a franchise-record 30-point collapse — and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2015-16, ending the NHL's longest active postseason streak. The unraveling began in the summer when Mitch Marner was sign-and-traded to Vegas, and accelerated when captain Auston Matthews tore his MCL in March and was lost for the season, leaving William Nylander (79 points) to carry the load. The reckoning was swift: GM Brad Treliving was fired in March, coach Craig Berube followed in May, and a proud franchise is retooling around Matthews and Nylander once again. The new season starts tracking here at puck drop.

Team Engine

Under-the-hood numbers, season by season: faceoffs, possession (SAT% is what the analytics crowd calls Corsi; Fenwick is the same idea minus blocked shots — above 50% means this team controls play), special teams, and shot rates.

07

Zone Time

Offensive-zone time is the why behind shot-attempt share (SAT%) above — a team that lives in the offensive zone out-attempts opponents. The line tracks how that's moved season by season; the bar is this year's split. Based on NHL player-tracking data.
