Montréal Canadiens

State of the teamThe Canadiens reached the Eastern Conference Final, the clearest sign yet their rebuild is ahead of schedule. Captain Nick Suzuki put up 101 points, the first Canadien to reach the century mark since Mats Näslund in 1985-86, and won the Selke. Cole Caufield scored 51 goals, the first Hab to hit 50 since Stéphane Richer in 1989-90, and took the Lady Byng. Young goaltender Jakub Dobeš backstopped the run. The rebuild owner Geoff Molson authorized in 2021-22 — after the franchise's first last-place finish in over 80 years — is nearly complete under coach Martin St-Louis. And Montreal's core is young enough to worry the rest of the East, with 22-year-old Lane Hutson on the blue line and 20-year-old Ivan Demidov, an All-Rookie pick, up front. Montreal enters the season with its Cup window opening and one piece still missing. The Canadiens chased second-line scoring all summer and came away empty, with GM Kent Hughes conceding the miss. They did lock up the core, extending Ivan Demidov for eight years and Jakub Dobeš for three. And they closed an era, trading Brendan Gallagher after a distinguished 14-year career in Montreal. The new season starts tracking here at puck drop.

Team Engine

Under-the-hood numbers, season by season: faceoffs, possession (SAT% is what the analytics crowd calls Corsi; Fenwick is the same idea minus blocked shots — above 50% means this team controls play), special teams, and shot rates.

07

Zone Time

Offensive-zone time is the why behind shot-attempt share (SAT%) above — a team that lives in the offensive zone out-attempts opponents. The line tracks how that's moved season by season; the bar is this year's split. Based on NHL player-tracking data.
