Columbus Blue Jackets

State of the teamZach Werenski won the Norris Trophy, and Columbus still missed the playoffs. His 81 points from the back end lifted the Blue Jackets to 92, but the drought reached six years. The Blue Jackets changed coaches midstream, replacing Dean Evason with Rick Bowness in January. With Werenski in his prime and young scorers like Kirill Marchenko and Adam Fantilli emerging, the pieces of a playoff team are taking shape. Columbus made peace with its Norris winner. Zach Werenski went from trade candidate, to vetoing a move to Dallas, to staying put — and the Blue Jackets added Valeri Nichushkin from Colorado for three picks while signing goaltender Jet Greaves for three years. The new season starts tracking here at puck drop.

Team Engine

Under-the-hood numbers, season by season: faceoffs, possession (SAT% is what the analytics crowd calls Corsi; Fenwick is the same idea minus blocked shots — above 50% means this team controls play), special teams, and shot rates.

07

Zone Time

Offensive-zone time is the why behind shot-attempt share (SAT%) above — a team that lives in the offensive zone out-attempts opponents. The line tracks how that's moved season by season; the bar is this year's split. Based on NHL player-tracking data.
