Anaheim Ducks

State of the teamThe young Ducks arrived ahead of schedule, jumping to 92 points. Then came the spring's biggest upset: Anaheim knocked out the two-time conference champion Oilers in the first round, and pushed eventual finalist Vegas to six games in the second. Cutter Gauthier (41 goals) headlined a breakout core that also featured Leo Carlsson and Beckett Sennecke. In his first season behind the bench, Joel Quenneville had Anaheim ahead of schedule by a year or two. Anaheim spent its summer defending its core rather than adding to it. Philadelphia's offer sheet for Leo Carlsson set a new NHL high at $18 million a season, and the Ducks matched, then rushed an extension to Pavel Mintyukov to head off another. Mason McTavish went to St. Louis for the No. 15 and No. 29 picks. The new season starts tracking here at puck drop.

Team Engine

Under-the-hood numbers, season by season: faceoffs, possession (SAT% is what the analytics crowd calls Corsi; Fenwick is the same idea minus blocked shots — above 50% means this team controls play), special teams, and shot rates.

07

Zone Time

Offensive-zone time is the why behind shot-attempt share (SAT%) above — a team that lives in the offensive zone out-attempts opponents. The line tracks how that's moved season by season; the bar is this year's split. Based on NHL player-tracking data.
